Fairies are DANGEROUS. And they don't want you to know about them. I love that this book takes the question of fairies and brownies and pixies seriously, it gives this story its power. I love the setting: the rambling old house out in the country, the secret room, the shadowy feeling that something is watching...
And I love the format of this series, with the uneven edges to the pages, the small size of the books. They just feel cool.
This is the first book of the series, and it starts off strong

I read this book in fifteen minutes while I was bored at work, and spent the whole time on the lookout for my boss, so maybe I missed some, uh, nuances. Overall, I can't say much beyond: it was cute. I think that maybe writing a series of five books instead of, say, fitting everything into two was kind of self-indulgent (authorial dreams of box sets?). Not a whole lot happens here. ...more

This book sets the stage for the rest of the series so not a whole lot happens. My son seemed to enjoy it though so that's all that really matters I guess. ...more

Loved the narrator's voice. Good introduction to the series. Would be good for the fairy loving kids. ...more

This is a fun book, but very short. I read it in 20 minutes while waiting for my daughter at piano lessons. That is pretty short even for young kids...and the subject matter seems meant for those old enough to handle fairly scary stuff--at least 7 or 8. Maybe it is a marketing ploy so you have to pay for another book for each 20 minute installment. Oh well, it gives me something to do during piano lessons--I drive to Barnes and Noble, get the next book, sit in one of their comfy chairs and read. ...more

I decided to read this book because I saw the ad for the movie based on the series, and the movie looks really GOOD! Anyway, I read this book really quickly, in one day, on my breaks and lunch hour at work. It's good. I would have really liked it when I was a kid. And I really like Mallory, the older sister. She fences and she ROCKS! ...more

I read this before I had Bookmooch to help me get books, and I don't think I ever read the sequels. Well, it was a really quick read, and entirely appropriate for kids as young as third grade. I read it again in two sittings, and I am ready for the sequels. ...more

This was a fun read. Very short, humorous, fantastical, faerie. Everyone in the group enjoyed it and even the parents are going to read the rest of them.
