I don't even know how to review this!
I listened to the audiobook, and for the first twenty minutes, it was well into NOPE NOPE NOPE territory for me. It was hitting all my NOPE buttons: excessively macho guys having pissing contests, stupid new terms that just BALLOON off the (virtual) page and ruin the narrative flow, loathsome main characters, needless brutality... Plus, I didn't like the reader in the audio version.

This is some good fantasy: magic with real and predictable rules, relevant lore, practically non-stop action, and exciting reveals. This is the seed of what fantasy should be like.
That said... I hate Sanderson's prose style. It's like he's a classically trained composer who can't help putting another two tonic chords at the end of a symphony: he just can't hold back and be subtle. Not overrated at all
I tried some of Sanderson’s SF and was not impressed. This is one of his most hyped series— I went in expecting to be let down.
I was not. Plot? Excellent. Foreshadowing? Excellent. Character development? Excellent. A light touch with romance, trust, emotions but without stripping characters of them? Yes. A compelling cast of supporting characters? Yes. Two MCs or opposite genders figuring out their relationship, and it doesn’t end up trite? Heck, yes.
Strongly recommend.

Some of the sequels looked interesting in the bookstore, so I requested this from the library. Granted, I was only inclined to read, oh, two or three pages. "I'm cruel because I can be" isn't much of an interesting characterization. And "Oh look, it's another fantasy world with slavery" isn't that intriguing either. Maybe there's more to this but ... I am not persuaded. In case that isn't obvious.

It took me longer than usual to get into this book because there are a lot of characters and remembering what powers/abilities everyone has took me awhile to get everything straight, so I could just enjoy the book. Now I can't wait to read the next one. I also really like the love story because it is really sweet and I love nerds!

4.5, at least! :) Really quite good!
I need to re-listen to these! (In fact, I just put them on my mp3 player again for a road trip!) Brandon Sanderson is a GREAT fantasy writer! His worlds and characters are SO interesting and well thought out! Awesome!!!

Super good stuff. Epic and enormous and really great. There's some gender and race stuff that wasn't great (there are exactly three women with speaking roles in this enormous epic novel). But the story is good and thrilling fun.

4.25, provisionally, until I finish the series.
An all-around very good fantasy novel. Good coherent new magic system, very good characters, excellent plotting and pacing. I'm going to read a lot more Sanderson. ...more
