The Selection meets Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I guess it's a fantasy, it's set in another world, one with frontiers to explore, but there wasn't any magic, or anything supernatural.
I enjoyed the first part, when our heroine decides to swap places with her maid to avoid an arranged marriage, but after that the pace dragged.
The character development was two-dimensional, which is okay if you've got a strong, compelling plot keeping you turning the pages.

This is my third Richelle Mead book and at this point I can say it will also be my last because her writing just doesn't work for me.
Mead fans will enjoy the fantasy and romance elements here. Adelaide is a fun heroine. Mead's writing is immediately evocative with strong descriptions of the story's surroundings. Unfortunately this serves to underscore the sub par world building in the rest of the plot. Pitched as a blend of Elizabethan and Western elements, the story does little to explain HOW s ...more
