On my second reading, i am finding this book too pious, and twee. Emily is a prig and a snob, and the Anne books have more funny gossip and side characters.
Orphan Emily is taken in by two maiden aunts and an uncle, one of the aunts is harsh and cold, the other relations are kind, but none of them understand her sensitive nature. Emily yearns to be a poet.
