This just became one of my all-time favorites! In fact, this may be my favorite L.M. Montgomery book, and I'm a huge "Anne" fan! I loved Valancy saying exactly what she thought to her stuffy family. I loved the drama and the romance, and the beautiful descriptions of the Canadian wilds. What a great book! It's a treat to read, just a joy with every page!

Oh the luxury of speaking one's mind...
And the sweet little cabin full of books on the private island is nothing to sneeze at, either.
Good choice to read after attending a wedding. ...more

An all-time favorite, I have no idea how many times I've actually read this. As an adult, I'm even more horrified by Valancy's family - so casually stifling and unloving - but I love Montgomery's quick characterizations of a large cast of characters. The plot has a few fun twists and turns, and the romance is delightful. It's comforting and escapist, but those moments are often hard-won for the characters.

L.M. Montgomery is a long time and all time favorite author of mine. She writes the perfect girls story with just the right mix of adventure, drama and happiness. I find her books a comfort to read and have re-read most of her works many times over the years. They are classics for a reason and that reason is they are great. These are true comfort books for me and books I enjoy re-reading again and again.

What a charming story! I hadn't realized that the author had written more than just the Anne of Green Gables series until I received this book in a gift exchange. It's a funny, heartwarming, old-fashioned tale full of fascinating (and infuriating) characters.

It wasn't until the second chapter before I realized that this seemed like a more proper, Canadian version of "The Ladies of Missalonghi", but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It's a quick read, but is almost exactly the plot of the Ladies.
I think that Montgomery (as the originator of the plot), handled the nuances more tactfully than McCollough did. I found my heart breaking and singing as appropriate for poor, beaten-down Vallancy in a way that I never experienced with the characters in the Ladies. ...more
