This is a companion book to The Giver, painting a dystopian society that is much harsher. Kira's mother has just died, leaving her an orphan. Kira is already viewed as an outcast as she has a damaged leg and walks with a limp. She is brought before the council of guardians on the charges of being a drain on the society. Her accuser has requested that she be left out in the fields for the beasts to destroy. Instead, the guardians decide that her special talent as a weaver could be useful to them

I definitely recommend this entire series for kids as young as middle school, but adults should read it too.
