I read The Giver earlier this year and absolutely loved it, so when I heard it had two companion books (Gathering Blue and Messenger), I naturally wanted to get hold of them.

I don't think it quite lived up to my expectations though. It was interesting, and I really enjoyed it, but it wasn't as mind-blowing as The Giver was. I think part of the problem was that it was presented as a companion novel, so I expected the same atmosphere as I'd found in The Giver and it just wasn't able to deliver. I ...more

This story was good, but I was frustrated that right when it looked like things were going to get more interesting, it ended.

Gathering Blue is a "companion" text to The Giver, which might be a nice way of saying it's a similar story in a different setting. Instead of a technologically advanced, streamlined society it's a messy, primitive one. But the gradual discovery of the "real" happenings in the society are the same.

I liked the idea that when we make art, sometimes we're overcome with something transcendent and a little magical. I wish the book had gone on a bit longer and explored the "artistry=magic" aspects. ...more
