I loved the Giver, and I loved the first quarter of this book. When Kira has to defend her life, I was thrilled with the level of detail that made me feel like I was there with her. From that point on, though, the book felt rushed and like it was skimming the surface of what could have been a striking and memorable story.

[2004 review.] This is a sequel to her awesome book The Giver, but only in the sense that it's also a vision of a dystopic future. In this book, society has regressed, rather than become the technologically-advanced world of The Giver, but it's still got all kinds of social ills and evil governments and a kid coming of age against that backdrop, in this case, a girl. Nice companion to The Giver, but completely stands on its own. Really lovely.

"The Giver" is one of my favorite books. I felt it was just as moving and engaging when I recently re-read it as an adult. "Gathering Blue", on the other hand, feels much more like a tween/teen book. The plot is simple and heavy-handed, and the character development is weak. ...more

Loved this, but felt like it was random and disconnected from The Giver.
However, after reading the final one, I see the connections.
