Okay, so I finished this book a couple of days ago now... and have been trying to figure out exactly how I felt about it. I've settled on 3 stars... I thought it was interesting, but there were definitely things I would have changed and absolutely things I could have done without.
The book started out quite slowly. At the beginning, I was like, "Errrmmm... this is popular? What??" It started with the mysterious flowers, and you're like, "What on EARTH is this book going to be about? Is this a Swe ...more

Hard to put down, it reads like a good thriller. One of the main detectives of is a chauvinist's dream, having little personality, but somehow attracting every woman character in his bed. I find it ironic that this character is the hero of a book that is ostensibly about the way women are mistreated. The other detective, the titular tattooed girl, is better, and if she had killed the other detective, this book might have gotten more stars from me.

These books were not my thing at all. The violence against women was so over the top that I couldn't help feel like the author was relishing it despite the purported mission of the protagonists to fight against it. Despite my criticisms, I was drawn in to the first and couldn't put it down. I started on the second right away and found I liked it even less, mainly because the main character seemed to morph into someone else all together (boob job? Come on!). Plot-wise, I felt like I was being str

Overall, I think this was a good thriller. If you liked the TV show Bones, then you will probably be able to stomach the gross murdering/torture aspects of the book and appreciate the exciting mystery that makes up most of this book. The prose is bearable but sometimes ridiculous.
I give this book two stars because it was a huge disappointment. I was hoping a book with a punk female hacker who would be awesome. I thought of how much I enjoyed the cyberpunk police thriller anime series Ghost in S ...more

Larsson's first book takes you quite a while to really get into - - he seems to be laying the groundwork for the series with his first 150 pages here - - but once you do, it's definitely worth the journey. I'm well into the second book, and now that I know the characters, the story moves quickly.
These books are not for everyone - - they are dark and violent, particularly on the sexual side - - -but I thoroughly enjoyed this first book and am continuing to enjoy the second in the series. ...more

I had no expectation when I bought the book, I was prompted more by the hype. The intro couldn't hold my attention more than a few minutes - but as the story goes deeper and pace higher, suffice to say in general this is a pretty engaging book though you can't avoid the impression that it's "Hollywood-ized". The ending is rather refreshing. (And it IS creepy in some parts).

This was fun to read while on vacation. Some parts of it were smart and well written, but I was often annoyed by how much info that were actually essentially to constructing point of view was held back to create suspense. And I am not sure I got or accepted the Lisbeth character as three-dimensional.

Definitely a worthwhile read, especially the stories about the Vanger family. Although it's not great literature and I am kind of tired of goth-like characters, the author painstakingly kept everything quite detailed and smart.

It did take me forever to care about anyone in the book, but once it picked up I couldn't put it down. I'll probably read the next one, but I'm not dying to find out what happens next.
