if i were judging this book solely on its artwork, it would be an easy five stars. there are five main stories, plus an introduction and a conclusion, each with their own style of illustration. it's not that i love them all equally, but i do generally appreciate range and variety :




in a way, it kind of reminded me of fear(s) of the dark, a film in which several different illustrators bring their own brand of creepy to life through unique animation stylings:

I was walking through the youth section of the library cashing after my son when I stopped. There in the recommended section was "Through the Woods" by Emily Carroll. It called to me with that eerie cover and memories of great reviews swept over my mind. For I must read this book. Well, it was not that easy.
I felt odd standing there surrounded by groups of teens and me older, wiser, and well hell, who gives a damn, I'm reading this book. For what a marvelous choice it was.

Oh, this was a creepy little book. Most of the stories simply had the feel of dark fairytales; only one seemed to be based on an actual fairytale (the final story, which was based on Little Red Riding Hood). One reminded me of Bluebeard, another of Hansel & Gretel, all were completely creepy. I loved it. The illustrations and sparse text make this look like a kids' book but unless you want your children to have nightmares I'd keep this to teen and adult audiences only. It was a very quick read,
