I'm always a sucker for any book that includes a beloved dog as a primary character, so I was fated to enjoy this novel (how could you not love The Doorman, smell and all?). It works far better once you understand that it was written for young adults and it is clever and sweet without ever being cloying. Markus Zusak is a great writer. When I first finished this book, I would have only given it three stars--I loved it until I got to the ending, which was totally disappointing and confusing. (I am not a deep reader and hate trying to figure stuff out.) Then I read about the book on Wikipedia and suddenly the ending was clear and made great sense. I started off really enjoying this one, but by the middle the overly florid writing started to wear on me. A beautiful turn of phrase can elevate a book, but this started to feel contrived and it just kept taking me out of the story to roll my eyes.
