Ugh, I love Markus Zusak's books so much! I don't know why I haven't read this one until now. I own all of his books, I've owned this one for years! I know that when it came out some people were kind of mixed in their reviews, so I kept bumping it down the pile, and I have to admit that I didn't love the very, very ending. I thought it should have ended sooner, not to spoil anything. But that's just me!

And I loved the journey of this book! STUNNING. The people that Ed meets, the things he does,

One and half stars, probably, only because I did think the story had its moments.

Once again, I find myself mystified by the crazy high ratings for a book on Goodreads. 3.5 I could see. But 4.11 (as of this writing)? For this book? Someone needs to explain this one to me. At best, it's an average YA telling a mildly interesting story with a mildly interesting message. But for what it was, this book was grossly overlong. And I'd deduct points for the writing style, which uses that same irritating

This is the most infuriating book ever written. EVER. It honestly raises my blood pressure even thinking about it.

Because it is well written! And I love the concept! And it is plotting along beautifully, and then you reach the GREAT REVEAL.

And it is the lamest thing ever in the history of lame things. It reaches hither-to unplumbed depths of lameness.

It's been a long time since I read this book!! I didn't even remember how it ended!! It's amazing what my brain retains and what it doesn't! It really is a great book though. It even has a moral! Everyone can do something to help others, no matter how pathetic your circumstances may be... I really love Ed Kennedy... I'm so proud of him for all the growth he manages through the story! :) Definitely worth reading!

While it's not as awe-inspiring in some ways as The Book Thief, I Am the Messenger is far more readable and just as brilliant. I think it is essentially Zusak's manifesto; by the end, his feelings about the meaning of being a writer are crystal clear. Anyway, after bungling a would-be robber's efforts at holding up a bank he and his similarly worthless friends are in, protagonist Ed receives an ace playing card with three addresses inscribed on it. Gradually he figures out that the addresses rep ...more

I started off really enjoying this one, but by the middle the overly florid writing started to wear on me. A beautiful turn of phrase can elevate a book, but this started to feel contrived and it just kept taking me out of the story to roll my eyes. "her voice steps politely from her mouth", "we talk among the night that has dripped upon us with silence" "there are hot tears cooking on his face and his eyes bite"... etc etc etc. I've learned that I like my prose to be pretty straightforward so t ...more

Okay, I have to admit, I almost gave up on this book. As I progressed through the beginning, it just wasn't grabbing me. The swearing seemed too much (I swear like a sailor in real life, but that doesn't mean I want the books I read to be filled with obscenities and foul-mouthed 19-year-olds), and Ed's mother aggravated me so much, I wanted to jump into the pages and smack her across the face. I began looking at the book with Nancy's Rule of 50 in mind -- if you're under 50 years old, give the b ...more
