3.5. If I was still a teen, this might have been My Book. I really, really liked it. It was head and shoulders above other books of its genre.
But, I'm an adult. So there was one major thing with Looking for Alaska that didn't sweep me away: Alaska. As a teen, I would have wanted to be her: fucked up, charming, full-figured, smart, full of obscure knowledge. She is the PERFECT teen.

I liked this for so many reasons, not the least of which being that there was a character named Lara.
Like his other book, a little idealistic in the youthful self-realization department, and slightly "after school special" in the major plot events, but the enveloping setting (I could so clearly picture the dorm rooms and the Smoking Hole), the lovingly imperfect and awkward characters, and stuff like this:
"you don't know how much things will matter until the knowing doesn't make any difference" ...more

If I could give Looking for Alaska a 4.5, I would. Once I picked this up, I could barely put it down. The last few chapters, however, did not intrigue me as much as the first 2/3rds of the book did. Regardless, the romantic angles were not what I found the most interesting; the banter between Miles and Chip (Pudge and the Colonel) did. The dialogue was fun, refreshing, and poignant. Whether they were focused on a shirt that needed ironing, poverty, or a tragic moment, their conversation and inte

I was a bit disappointed with this book. I love the vlogbrother Youtube channel so I decided it was about time I got around to reading one of John Green's books. I have since read The Fault in Our Stars, which I liked a lot more than Looking for Alaska. I found Looking for Alaska extremely predictable. I think one of the main problems was that I already knew a lot about John Green from his YouTube channel and this book was very autobiographical (he says it isn't, but I don't believe him). There

The best thing you can say about a book is, "I couldn't put it down." John Green gives us that kind of taut narration as we are drawn into the high school story of finding people one can actually trust and admire. The story also has boarding school pranks, hot girls, and studying while eating McInedible's fries. Along the way, some big questions are asked, rephrased, and a variety of answers are posited.

I've been wanting to read this for ages, and finally got around to doing so this week. I had no expectations at all - didn't even know what the story was about - but the title kept popping up everywhere, so I figured it was time I saw what the fuss was all about.
Fortunately I ended up really liking it. It's character-driven more than plot-driven, but the way John Green writes really makes it work. I read it over the course of two days, and found myself thinking about it constantly during the sec ...more

YA doesn't get much better than this. I laughed out loud, I cried. The audiobook is well done, too. I'll definitely be reading more John Green.
