A sprawling teen fantasy that encompasses an entire world. Katsa is Graced, meaning that in her home country of the Middluns she is shunned by most people and practically owned by her uncle the king who values her Grace. (A Grace is a talent for something, and Katsa's appears to be killing.) She meets a young man, also Graced, who comes from a country where the Graced are celebrated, and together they embark on a journey to solve a mysterious crime. Along the way they uncover secrets about thems ...more

Rather weird to reread a book where you remember nothing from the first read. And I do mean nothing - it wasn't even just that I couldn't remember ahead of time, but recognized plot points as we got to them - I was totally blank.

Fortunately it was just as good a "first read" the second time around. I enjoyed getting to know Katsa and Po and see how their friendship grew and blossomed into something more. I liked their interactions with Bitterblue, and how Katsa was forced to learn to see herself

My principal recommended this book to me. As far as I'm concerned this is one more reason that people should want to hump her leg in public. I loved this book so much I downloaded Fire using the Nook app on my phone because my actual Nook wouldn't get signal so I could start it immediately upon finishing this one.

Graceling had everything I need in a book; action, adventure, romance, a message that doesn't beat you over the head but is there if you want to teach it, a hint of gayness if you want

Forgot I'd read this, saw it on a display, thoroughly enjoyed it again. I think this deals with some of the issues in The Hunger Games, but I like Katsa better than Katniss.

Another YA fantasy novel with a strong female lead. I liked the story of this book better, and really liked the main character who struggles with having a supernatural power of killing. This book twists around a lot of the conventions of fantasy novels and has a lot of good women who seem to be damsels in distress but then take control of their situations. The writing was a little uneven at times, but the characters are all very compelling. I liked this one a lot and will also read the rest of t ...more

Good story, in a limited medieval setting, with a woman who comes to realize that she can take back control over her destiny and not leave it up to authority figures. Plus she kicks butt, literally. Romance is obvious but not too overdone, with exciting action interludes. Interesting magical system of some people having one enhanced ability, ie able to swim really well, read minds, or fight supernaturally well; also interesting view of how this could affect the political landscape.

Super fantastical. LOve, love, LOVE it! Katsa is my hero...what a kick-ass female character who refuses marriage...and Po, PO! What a wonderfully refreshing male character. Can't wait to devour Fire and Bitterblue! ...more

I found this predictable but enjoyable. Could have done with some tighter editing, but there's good adventure and a bit of romance. ...more

The exposition/beginning part of this book is kind of choppy--a lot of backstory is handed to you in essay form in the first few chapters. But once it gets going, it ends up being pretty good, with forceful characters who actually experience change, and moments when I had to close the book because it was too exciting! So by the end, I was really enjoying this book.

Good world building, but uneven plot- v fast in parts, and then dragging on elsewhere.
This also read very young, which is a dumb critique to make of YA, but true. I think I will hand it off to the ten year old of my acquaintance.

Immediately captivating; I think it would appeal to all lovers of YA fiction, both fans of Robin McKinley and those who are less fond of fantasy but like a good coming of age/teenage angst novel.

An interesting debut fantasy novel. I look forward to seeing more from this author!
