Caroline is beautiful, musically gifted, and good; she is the shining star of a small town on the water. The story is told by her twin sister Louise, who is almost sick with jealousy and longing. Louise is not a flawless person, but I loved her just the same: her work-roughened hands, her terrible puns, her puzzlement at her anger when a friend falls in love with her sister. From everything I have heard and read about this book, I expected to really hate it. And I didn't. Nor did I think it was about what many critical papers have argued, about the younger twin stealing the birthright of the older. It's about perception, pent-up aggression, and cutting off your nose to spite your face. It's about being so angry at something - nothing - that you forget to do things for yourself. It's about being a teenager. Louise is a whiner. But she feels real.

It took me a while to get into this book and I read it for my Newbery class, but it was wonderful. I loved the lyricism and identified with the frustration that the less favored twin felt.

I think I read this in the 90s sometime? I'm not completely sure. At the time I could relate very well to the way the protagonist didn't get along with her sister.
