This book was just ... boring. And that's an odd thing to say about a book that is about a private investigator, witches, ghosts, purgatory, monsters, and vampires. At first I thought she was just setting up the story, and it would get going soon, so I kept reading, but it continues to drag. There's too much set-up, too much detailed dialogue about nothing much, and most of all, the main character never really seems to be surprised or alarmed. She SAYS she is, but I just don't FEEL it. 2.5. It started off better than it ended. The main character is interesting and well-developed (which is good, since the novel is in the first person), but the supporting characters much less so. "The Grey" never really seemed terribly well fleshed-out as a place or a concept, and so the main character's struggles to understand and deal with it didn't really connect. I may try another book in the series to see if this issue resolves as the series continues, but I'm not totally sold.

And seriously, how many times can you encounter the weird and supernatural and refuse to believe in it before you start sounding like a moron? I was tired of her whining about just how much she didn't w

A good start to the series, I think she struggles a bit with defining the world she's working in, but this gets better as the series goes on.
