This book was just ... boring. And that's an odd thing to say about a book that is about a private investigator, witches, ghosts, purgatory, monsters, and vampires. At first I thought she was just setting up the story, and it would get going soon, so I kept reading, but it continues to drag. There's too much set-up, too much detailed dialogue about nothing much, and most of all, the main character never really seems to be surprised or alarmed. She SAYS she is, but I just don't FEEL it. 2.5. It started off better than it ended. The main character is interesting and well-developed (which is good, since the novel is in the first person), but the supporting characters much less so. By the end of the book, I was rather sick of hearing how frightened/scared/desperate Harper was and how the Grey and everything connected to it felt cold/nauseating/bad. And seriously, how many times can you encounter the weird and supernatural and refuse to believe in it before you start sounding like a moron? I was tired of her whining about just how much she didn't w ...more

A good start to the series, I think she struggles a bit with defining the world she's working in, but this gets better as the series goes on. ...more
