I read this book for my Newbery class and fell in love with the characters. I love how Susan Patron is able to so eloquently capture what it feels like to be 10. Also, it's such a smart book, with literary references (HMS Beagle, "Are You My Mother?" etc). I love the whole debate over "Slow Children At Play." Highly recommended for ages 10 and up. ...more

I enjoyed the book, but I have to say that I preferred Rules, and I'm a little annoyed that this won the Newbury over it.

Two major reasons for this:

1) Lucky's moronic decisions throughout the book - sure, she's a kid, but she's also kind of an idiot.

2) Cynthia Lord, who wrote Rules, lives in the same town as the book store I work in. We were rooting for her.

Sweet, and insightful into the imaginative world of childhood, this book is so much more than just the word "scrotum."

Frankie and I listened to it in the car. I fell asleep...Frankie drove...

Just kidding, Dan drove when I fell asleep. Didn't really keep my interest until the last CD where she actually plans her "escape". Frankie said it was ok, but not great. My thoughts exactly.

Just started this book but seeing as how it's got a bunch of librarians in an uproar for using the word "scrotum" (it's a children's book) it's caught my interest. It promises to be a very good book for many reasons besides using the "s" word (who knew it was a curse?) ...more

Oddly slow moving for a children's book. I like that it's about poor people, but it's not didactic or moralizing. It's just about a kid's adventures, except they involve living in a trailer and eating government surplus food. ...more

SCROTUM, SCROTUM, SCROTUM. There, I said it! Read it for the controversy, read it anyway. Laugh out loud funny (how often do we see it spelled out?) and inspiring for kiddos.

I read this book for my Children's Lit class, and largely because of its controversial status. Overall it was a good story, and I think older children would enjoy it. ...more
