So, I’ve finished the first half of Gene Wolfe’s Shadow and Claw, comprising the first two books of The Book of the New Sun. It took me a while to get through it, and I figured that, before I started on book two, it might be a good idea to shift gears, and read something a bit more mindless, and much, much lighter. I needed to cleanse the palate, I suppose. A book about whales on stilts sounded like just what I needed.

I listened to this on audio several years ago, but reread the print version after my 10 & up bookgroup chose it for October. I found it a much funnier story in print, where the illustrations help build the world of the book. It's wacky and weird, and now I want to pick up the rest of the series.

Lily's Dad works as a scientist in a lab at an "abandoned warehouse". Visiting on Take Your Child to Work Day, Lily notices some strange things. Like, her Dad's boss has rubbery blue-gray skin and a bag over his head.
