This feels like a creative writing exercise, or one of those experimental plays where actors play multiple roles. I found it both excitingly ominous, and frustratingly unconnected, until the end. I was drawn through the layers of story by the power of wanting to know what the key was - how the scenarios were connected.

An absolute jewel of a book. Impossible to describe without giving anything away, but it was so finely written that I simply couldn't put it down.

"This is the first thing Eric Seven notices about Blessed Island. There will be many other strange things that he will notice, before the forgetting takes hold of him, but that will come later."
In June 2073, Eric Seven arrives at Blessed Island chasing a story. It isn't the first time his work as a journalist has brought him to the far reaches of society. Nor is it the first time he has encountered strange locals.

3.5, definitely. It was a set of wonderfully told stories, but the ties didn't feel very deep. Each story stood very well on its own--they were beautiful, well-constructed, and enthralling.
But I struggled with the connection. Different kinds of love, the loving acts we do for other people that we maybe don't even notice. I went into Midwinterblood with very few expectations. I had never read Marcus Sedgwick’s books before, and I don’t read a lot of horror. Many reviews have commented on how the author expertly weaves a variety of storylines together. For me, the plot points themselves and construction of the story led this book to feel like a YA version of Lost, but in a bad way.

As soon as I finished this book I wanted to read it again, maybe backwards this time. If you don't know the structure, it's seven stories plus an epilogue that goes backwards in time, from 2073 to an indeterminate time in the past (pre-900). You don't find out how the stories are tied together until the end, but there are lots of connections along the way, including the appearance of characters over and over with the same names, and all the stories take place on the same island. That's about all

It's a good thing I didn't have much planned for today, because once I started this book I had to keep going to the end. It is not structured like a traditional novel, but reads like a series of ghost stories, linked together by three recurring characters. Really an excellent read, but I don't understand why it is cataloged as young adult. Maybe because Sedwick's other books are?

3.5. This wasn't what I was expecting, but still beautifully written.
