No one ever wins, here. Bunch of dogs fighting over scraps of something ... you don't even know what it is.

2.5 stars

The plot in this book is pretty minimal, and can be summed up in two words: get out. All of the main characters are just surviving and trying to get out ... get out of the city they are in, get out of the circumstances they are in, get out of the chains they are wearing.

The strength of this book is in the characters, and most of the characters didn't really grab me. Ocho and T

Okay, I think this is the book that finally makes me take a stand and say "It's not a fucking YA book just because some of the central characters are youths."

Will older kids (read: Teenagers) be cool with it? Yes. Will some (not all) of the younger ones? Yes. Hell, I was reading King and his ilk by the time I was 10, and I'm not overly-damaged. The violence is fairly constant, and not in any way sanitized.

But will they grasp some of the messages within it, regarding fanaticism, indoctrination, l

I enjoyed Ship Breaker but I think that this was even better! The world that Bacigalupi imagines, a future Waterworld-lite with the coastal cities "drowned", social structures breaking down and private armies/gangs running things is so realistically drawn that you can actually see it. This isn't a sequel to the first book, just an expansion on the world of Ship Breaker.

The Drowned Cities by Paolo Bacigalupi (2012):

Oh Paolo Bacigalupi, you are so awesome and I so wish I could enjoy your books as much as I appreciate and admire them. The Drowned Cities is a companion novel to Ship Breaker. Both books are set in the same world but The Drowned Cities is in a different location and set years earlier. The connection between the books is obvious in some ways but I often wished some hint of how the plots and characters impacted each other.

Some background on my reading

I flew through this one as fast as I flew through the first one. It was also quite good, and definitely worth the read, though I liked the first one more.

It's still the same world, with a bit of character overlap, but it's a completely new story.

Definitely enjoyable.

Goodreads informs me that this is a YA novel. That makes sense. I thought it was kind of simple/underdeveloped for an adult novel. Goodreads also informs me that this is a "companion" to a previous novel (as does the back of the book....but apparently I neglected to read the cover). That also makes sense. I thought it was odd that there was no explanation of certain things, despite allusions to explanations.

Fascinating read...A tad unsettling with all that's going on in the world right now. Are we headed this way? I worked my quickly through all three of these books. Definitely grabbed my attention. ...more
