May be better in paperback

I loved the imagery, the worlds, the characters in this book. The flow felt somewhat jittery to me, and though I have lots of questions, I’m not sure that I’ll read another book to find the answer. I would have liked someone — narrator, anyone — to summarize what we learned in this book, because frankly what I needed to know to follow was so scattered that I’m not sure. Awesome. So many cool characters: Maxine, Grant, Oturu, The Meddling Man, Tracker, Byron, Sarai... I loved Grant and his relationship with Maxine - but I did feel like I was missing something, a prequel that would tell how those two met, how they fell in love... Did I miss a book or a short novel that came before? Nonetheless, I enjoyed it tremendously! Some parts were quite confusing but I think that everything will be explained later on, in upcoming books.

I'm trying to pinpoint what, exactly, put me off. I liked the concept - tattoos, worn on the skin during the day yet come alive at night - and I was intrigued by the Wild Hunt aspect. But... It just didn't come together for me. Maxine didn't engender any sympathy or empathy within me. I found her a bit dense, true, but she wasn't any more dense than characters in other books I've read.
