This book is the second that I've read by Gail Carson Levine. Although this one has a storyline similar to Ella Enchanted (teenage girl goes through trials and tribulations, grows wiser, and things work out positively in the end), it was different enough that I was not bored.
The story is set in the same enchanted universe as Ella Enchanted, and halfway through, the reader realizes that this one is loosely based on the Snow White story (or at least the one I learned thanks to Walt Disney).

Snow White is not one of my favorite fairytale heroines, so that may have something to do with my unenthusiastic reception to this book. Many of the characters are likeable enough, and interesting things happen throughout the story. I enjoyed the connections to Ella Enchanted and how Gail Carson Levine used elements from Snow White to craft her own unique story. BUT, for some reason, I had a hard time finishing it. It just didn't click for me.

Despite the poor sound quality and over-emotive voice acting on the PlayAway on which I listened to this, the medium was not the culprit for my sense that this is not one of Levine's better works. I do like some of the twists she takes on Snow White: Azah, our Snow White is a hideously ugly commoner, and it is her voice which is fairest in the land. The mirror is inhabited by an imp who manipulates the queen (and Azah) for his own reasons Still, the prose is gushing. Azah's relentless angst over

I just finished this book... and it was all right. I liked her other books better. I dunno... it just didn't speak to me like Ella Enchanted did, you know? It was a nice little story, but it just didn't move me. *shrugs*
And a weird thing was that I normally really like when an author takes a break from text text text text text, to add something like a poem or song or whatever... But the songs in this book (and there were many of them) were just NOT my type of poetry or something. Some of them we ...more

This was a really cute twist on the Snow White story. It takes place in this off-beat fairy tale land where Fairy Godmothers do more harm than good, and commoners still end up marrying the prince, but there a lot more screwed up stuff going on in between. If you've ever seen Ella Enchanted, this is another book by the same author, and its based in the same world, different kingdom. I really liked how Ms. Levine was able to take the flat fairy tale characters and humanize them. Making the prince

I don't remember when I read this but I remember being gravely disappointed.

Pretty cute, but a little disappointing.

This retelling of Snow White takes place in the same world as Levine's first book, Ella Enchanted. While Fairest isn't as good at the first (but then, what is?), this was a fun read.

A very clever retelling of Snow White.
