When she arrives at Sword and Cross Academy, Luce quickly learns that her new boarding school is a joke. She has to give up her cell phone, and there are cameras (aka "Reds") watching her every move. She isn't sure she can trust Arriane, the first girl to approach her, or the two hottest guys she's ever seen. Cam is at least friendly and charming, while Daniel is hot and cold with her. Luce is also dealing with the death of her last boyfriend which might have been her fault, and the strange shad ...more

Twilight wanna-be, that started off strong but then didn't deliver.

What I liked:
- The reform school gothic setting. Extra points for the pool in remodeled cathedral, with the stained glass windows. That was cool!
- The non-klutzy, fairly intelligent heroine
- Good sense of menace and mystery
- Two intriguing boys, not just one
- Not vampires!
- Awesome cover. I want that dress. Okay, that's stretching things, I know...

What I didn't like:
- Instant friend syndrome. Has ANY new kid in school ever enjoy

There was a point in which I thought this book was going to be in the 'like Twilight, but better category'. Unfortunately, it's significantly worse than Twilight, so I'm left rather at a loss. Somehow the characters are flatter, the protagonist less likable and even less proactive, the plot duller and less believable, and the anti-feminism more abhorrent. If you want a great YA urban fantasy with fallen angels, check out Cassandra Clare's stuff. ...more

I'll be honest - I read this one for the cover. I saw it back in August and just loved it. I mean, look at it. Gorgeous!

The book itself though, not so much. It was a relatively entertaining, quick read, but on the whole it didn't do too much for me. I really like the concept of fallen angels (who are poised to take over the throne from vampires, apparently), but I feel like so much more could have been done with it.

I suppose the biggest problem I have is the characters. The only ones who have an

How to review this without giving major spoilers (pub. date is next month)? Not sure that's possible, but I'll try.

Luce (Lucinda) has spent most of her HS years at Dover Prep, a New England prep school, making friends and doing normal teenage stuff. One day, she and Trevor go into a cabin and start making out. Something happens - she's not sure what - but a fire breaks out and Trevor doesn't survive. Turns out that for years she's been seeing these shadows hovering around, and her time at Dover

Fallen is the type of paranormal romance that seems to be a dime a dozen these days. However, it does stand out by being somewhat better written than many I've read recently, and for actually having a love interest that I find believable for once!

One thing that did bother me though was Luce's... I don't even know whether to call it naivety, cluelessness, recklessness or just plain stupidity. Very frustrating, and I occasionally wanted to shake her and get her to understand that That Is

"He was always so charismatic and great."

Lucinda, you are a nincompoop.

This was like...a slightly better Twilight. The heroine had no defining characteristics, no motivation, cowered at everything that happened to her, and ended up being carried around a lot. Everyone else was pretty interesting, comparatively, but geez Louise does no one know how to give a main character INTERESTS anymore? Or at least something that defines her personality. Lucinda was defined by being a book-long plot contriv

Not compelling

Fans of twilight or the vampire dairies might like this. For me, though, it was too full of mysterious back story and set up for future books to be fulfilling. You feel as lost as the MC clearly is, and that shouldn't happen in third person for an entire book. The three star rating is for the potential and because, despite the potential for a whine fest, it didn't come down to that.

Well, I had high hopes for this book but they were just not realized. I think that this is a fascinating concept that suffers from poor writing skills & shallow character development. It never goes deep enough. Even understanding that this is the first in the series and that more depth will probably be revealed in the next book, the first book has to be written well enough to make me want to read more and this just didn't. ...more

I started on this back in August or September or something. I don’t know what made me put it down but I did. During the last week of December, I picked it up again. I do really enjoy it. I wouldn’t quite say Luce is a stalker, but she does give off the vibes of it. I like Daniel, but he’s so hard to read sometimes. I think it’s rather strange that while I am completely fascinated by religion and all that. I’m currently in dispute with my own religion, whatever that means haha. But I really liked ...more
