Oh. My. God. It's like you take all the different movies and stories that you can and mash them up together--there's no way to make it sound good. There's a spaceship attack and an evil corporation, there's a contagious zombie-disease and a rogue AI, and the battle fleet is still coming, and I can hardly BREATHE and it just worked so well.

When you do an epistolary novel (or found documents, or whatever you want to call it), there's a delicate balance of voice. Letters don't usually sound like na

Full disclosure: I was predisposed to like this book for not just one but TWO reasons. First of all, because I absolutely LOVE books that play with the media, and I've seldom seen books that do it as well as this one. Secondly because I'm a huge fan of epistolary novels, and this one came close enough to count.

Fortunately the plot lived up to it as well. It took me a little while to get into it properly, as you're literally thrown into the middle of the action (... much like "Sleeping Giants" ac

Couldn't put it down! Went and bought a hard copy because reading this on a Paperwhite is decidedly suboptimal.* (And decided to just buy Gemina right then, since I was thoroughly hooked.)

What genre is this? I see elements of:
-Hard science fiction
-Space Opera (meant non-pejoratively)
-Military science fiction
-Action-Adventure
-Character study
-Romance
-Feminism
-Horror
(FTR, it was shelved at B&N under "YA Fantasy." Wut? No.)

While some would style this a teen romance in a science fiction wrapper, I

Well, THAT was an exciting read! After hearing such great things about _Illuminae_, I should have known to have book 2 queued up and waiting. The epistolary format might turn some people off, but I think it worked well here. Definitely recommended to space opera fans.

Just amazing good fun, with tons of action. The plot is made of basically every disaster that could happen in a futuristic world and the hero is a real bad-ass 17 year old girl. Fun fun fun. And beautiful to look at.
