It is adult fiction, and there is no set main character, it shifts between the pair, since they're on two different ships. I do not recall their names.
 Maybe this one:
      Maybe this one: Illuminae
Illuminaecannot remember much, but was hard to read as an ebook, worked not well on a Kindle, due to to the tricks with graphic text, spiralling once around the page etc. Was a little better to use and read on a tablet (iPad mini).
Cannot remember a Zombie infection, but the "AI that goes crazy" and the "illegal mining" rings a bell, also the very distinct playing around with graphics, logs etc. . So after some consideration I think, this is your searched for book.
This is a series (trilogy), but the next book has different main characters, and while I started it, I could not get into it. Liked the first one a lot, jupp just checked.

Yeah! That's the book, i didn't even know it was a trilogy! Even found out that it has got a 0.5 Prequel. You were very helpful, thank you!

As for details about the look of the book, i remember it being very distinct. Showing pieces of information in drawn data logs, text curved on space tracing the path of the ships, so on.
I can't quite think of a year-span, but it was fairly recent.
