Good gravy, what a tediously slow book with NO payoff at the end! I respect Waters's 19th century tone, but The Turn of the Screw or Rebecca or even Jane Eyre, this ain't. The attention to detail was the book's best feature, but the protagonist was frankly unlikable, the plot was all over the place, and did I mention that in the end, there was NO PAYOFF?? I was ready to applaud a twist that never actually manifest itself, leaving me to wonder, "If I thought of it, why didn't she?"
