I started reading this book in early December of 2007, and am now finished (August 2008). What took so long? Well, I'm a big fan of the Belgariad and the Mallorean, by Eddings. But I tried his other series, and noticed that they seemed an awful lot like the Belgariad, just with the names changed. So this book excited me because it was an Eddings stand-alone, had gotten great reviews, and I thought it might be something different. Nope. There was a good storyline in this book, but way too many conversations that dragged it on too long. I usually find myself skipping to the conversations and action in a book, but this time I found myself skipping the conversations. The characters discussed everything over and over. To be fair, it is science fiction and I am not a huge fan of the genre. I think I would have really liked it if it was about 200-300 pages shorter.
