Wow! I don't even know how to classify this one. Time travel, vampires, the blurring of the boundaries between reality and make believe. I have no problem with suspension of belief for any of that, but everyone being that passionate about literature. I just can't buy it.
It was a smidgen slow in the middle, and I occasionally rooted for the bad guy, but that's probably 'cause I'm an uncultured barbarian who pretty much hates literature . . .
Anyway the ending redeemed it.

This was pretty cool. Fforde is definitely clever and extrememly creative. The book is set in an alternate London around 1985 where people time travel and jump in and out of books. Jane Eyre gets kidnapped out of the original manuscript and all copies of the book are changed. The main character, Thursday Next, has to try and get Jane back and set things back to normal.

I felt like this was "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for Bibliophiles", where you either had to be Fforde's brand of drunk or insanely obsessive to really get it. I'm not, so it didn't grab me like I hoped it would. ...more

It's a witty, sci-fi, alternate history, supernatural, crime novel for bibliophiles. And honestly, that's all I need to write. If that description doesn't ward you off, you'll probably enjoy this a lot. ...more

He seems to be the kind of author who doesn't bother to explain what's going on until about three chapters in... but everything is so interesting, I'm up for the ride. ...more

Lovely. Not quite a "so engrossing that I have to stay awake all night to finish it" kind of book, but very enjoyable all the same. ...more

Pretty good. Clever twist, though I saw where it was going early on. Not as good as the Jack Spratt books, though.
