This is a thoroughly delightful and brilliant book. I chuckled and chortled all the way through this book; it’s hilarious. There are many interesting characters and I am eager to read the rest of this series. I’m not sure that the successive books will also get 5 stars from me: the clever premise might get a tad old; I’ll have to see. This unusual story is a bit difficult to define. It fits multiple genres: sci-fi, mystery, humor, fantasy, and fiction. And the author manages to create an entire ...more

I resisted reading this book for quite awhile, but thankfully, my friend Lisa (LisaVegan), kept bugging me about it! I thought that I would not appreciate it as I have never read Jane Eyre. But, Lisa is right, you do not have to know anything about Jane Eyre to understand this book.

This had been on my TBR list for a while; I finally read it as part of the popsugar 2015 Ultimate Reading Challenge, first book by a popular author. I'm not sure exactly how popular Fforde is, but ... Close enough?

This book isn't without a certain charm, but I found it too weak to really sustain my interest. The protagonist lacks personality, it's ostensibly written in first person but keeps shifting into third person omniscient at random moments, and the villain is too self-consciously evil to be interesting. Also, I thought the altered version of Jane Eyre in The Eyre Affair was superior to the ending of the real book, so I spent the entire time futilely rooting for what I knew was the losing side. ...more

For anyone who enjoys total absurdity and reading, especially if you've ever wished you could go into a book. Not the best of the series, but a good start and would be worth it just as a gateway to the next two. ...more

That was a fun read. Alternative history, lots of literary references, mystery! intrigue! I still laugh thinking about Richard the Third performed with audience participation like Rocky Horror Picture Show.
