I don't have as much time to binge-listen to audiobooks these days (seminary), but man, do I love this book! SO FUN!

Man... that book was FANTASTIC! I didn't get ALL the references (I'm not quite old enough), but I got enough of them to make me feel VERY nerdy. I actually paused the book a couple times to rent an old DVD or google an old video game... or listen to an old song the main character is experiencing. I highly recommend doin

A 3.5 star review. I had a very hard time deciding whether to round up or down, but I loved the end, so think I will leave it at 4.

It took me a LOT longer to read this book than it should have done, but I had several problems with it, which is also what pulled the rating down to 3.5.

First quarter of the book: FAR too much telling and too little showing. I understand that world-building is necessary, but I'm not impressed by how he went about it (not to say that I could've done better, but then I

I wanted to love this book. I should have loved it. I grew up in the 80's. I'm a geek, who loves video games, comics, etc, etc. I played Pac-Man as a kid, and certainly appreciate the culture of my younger years. However...I found this love letter to the 80's and video game culture boring after awhile. The main character is really nothing more than a typical teenager. And while I thought all the 80's trivia was cute at first, I quickly started to get annoyed by it. Ok, we get it. You love the 80 ...more

This is one of those books that generous book reviewers describe as a "love letter" to the 1980s, which is a nice way of saying it's completely fanboying about the 1980s. An virtual-reality CEO obsessed with the geek culture of the 1980s leaves his fortune to the first person to solve his riddles in the second-life MMO he made. The plot has some twists but like The Goonies or other cheesy 80s films, the ending is completely sappy and satisfying to the part of me that still cheers for happy and i ...more

My 16-year-old son recommended this to me. I LOVED it. That boy of mine sure knows how to pick them. His other recommendation this year was The Martian, which I also thoroughly enjoyed.

This book is set in a somewhat apocalyptic future but here the apocalypses is the emergence of virtual reality. Once people get to play in OASIS, the global virtual reality universe, they don't want to do anything else.

The creator of OASIS, a reclusive game designer genius, has coded an Easter egg into OASIS. Wh

I read a review on Io9 that praised this book for connecting its obsessive focus on 80s culture in a dystopian future with the failed economic policies of the Regan years. I definitely see how you could read that, but I am not sure the author did.

A totally entertaining read. But I found myself frustrated that Cline revealed some brilliant flashes of insight (armored buses; stacks of trailers; an African American woman choosing to use a white male avatar to gain access to his privilege; indenture

Fun! The detail is solid. Some of the relationships were pretty good. The romantic interest interaction was terrible.
