Wow, a fantastic collection of SF stories. "Stories of Your Life" was the basis for the movie Arrival; I liked both but I think the short story was better because it didn't have the drama of the pundit-motived bioterroist and the weird scene with the Chinese politician.
"Division by Zero" went a little further than my math understanding, but it was still touching. A lot of the stories had religious themes in a detached sort of way. "Hell is the Absence of God" made me think about the moral impli ...more

In a strange way I feel *we* (but is it me?) have moved on from the philosophical questing/probing/clevering Chiang does here. I feel we have moved more toward story. Even Paul Auster’s New York series — would it work now? Jesse Ball’s fables hang in there bc they are not too intellectual. It all feels a bit pretentious these days, like, who cares? We are burning and melting and drowning: talk to me about that! (See Sandra Newman’s The Heavens and Lydia Millett’s A Children's Bible. Read them!).

This was the best collection of short stories I have read yet! So unusual, and intelligent - they had me thinking about them for days. Only two stories in the volume that did not shine as bright as the others (for me). Now I'm going to go dive into his next collection!

[I just read the novella, “Story of Your Life;” it looks like the separate listing for the novella got merged with the listing for the full collection sometime between April and July 2021.]

Absolutely brilliant collection. Chiang's writing is fantastic.
