A pure good time! Law's storytelling voice was so spot on, I really, really believed that she was a 13 year old girl from Kansas! Such a fun book: the characters, the plot, the premise! I would love to have a savvy of my very own! I have to say that this year's Newberys have been a real treat for me. I can't imagine having to chose between this book and Graveyard Book for the medal, they were both excellent.

It sounded cute, and I put off reading it. And then, of course, I liked it. Despite Mibs turning 13 at the beginning of the story, I think this is a story for slightly younger readers. It's got its sadness, of course, with the father in the hospital, and it's not afraid to mention realities like a homeless man on the street, and there's just the tiniest little smidge of romance. Mibs' family all have special abilities, "savvy" that becomes known on their thirteenth birthdays. The gifts seem to be anything -- controlling weather, hearing thoughts, catching radio waves in jars, making new land appear out of nowhere all sorts of things. I think I would have found it a little more convincing if there were more reason behind the savvy (some seemed plausible, others more like aspects of folk tales).
