It's as if my favorite fantasy books — Fire, The Hero and the Crown, Beauty, The Name of the Wind, The Goose Girl, Summers at Castle Auburn, Daughter of the Forest — all got together and had a baby. I wish I could be reading Uprooted for the rest of my life.

Having started with Spinning Silver, I couldn't help but feel like Uprooted started out in much the same way -- a cold-hearted master bearing away a young woman to help better his own position. Beyond that similarity, though, the stories are distinct, even if they do feel similar in tone and style. Where the heroine in Spinning Silver was accomplished before she was taken (and where "taken" is hardly the right word, since she went of her own accord, of sorts), the one in Uprooted needed more tim

I enjoyed the obvious influence of Eastern European folklore, and the fact that Agnieszka, the main protagonist, was so intuitive, brave, and kind. Although there is a romance that develops, which I wasn't all that excited about, it's a minor subplot that doesn't dominate the story but rather provides for emotional motivation for the characters. The wood is spooky and well described. My main issue with the book was that the ending and explanation/resolution of the Wood didn't quite pack a punch

My library has a service where you ask for recommendations. I had asked for good writing in the sci fi/fantasy genre with minority writers. They haven't pointed me wrong yet.
The back of the book teaser is covered within the first 30 pages and then things get crazy. Other than a slow beginning this book is ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION. It's almost 4am, soooo.
Loved the world, loved the main characters, and even though it killed me, the slow burn was satisfying. (More would've been appreciated!) And I'd love a sequel or an extra epilogue.
2018 re-read: Time changes how we perceive all things—I know this. But it is wild to see what resonates with me with this book, almost three years later—three years that I have spent uprooting myself and re-rooting myself, with a year ahead that will find me uprooting and re-rooting again. I loved a lot about this book- the main character was interesting, there was terrific world building and scene setting, but the love/hate relationship between Agnieszka and the dragon was off-putting and I just don't like reading books with such awful dynamic between the MCs.

Overated. It was okay. Things that were interesting about it seemed abandoned by the author and they were left undeveloped. Be warned: if controlling, critical, older white men who repeatedly call their younger female proteges stupid irriates you...don't read this. I found the romance in this book nauseating.

The Dragon takes a girl every decade - Agnes doesn't really think she'll be chosen. Little does she know that being taken by the Dragon sets her on the path to rescuing the long-lost queen and facing off againt a volatile and corrupted Woods that threatens to consume everything she holds dear.

A bit on the dark fantasy / horror side for my taste, but still very good, and amazingly original with a quite likeable protagonist.
