I am tempted to give this four stars based on page-turn-ability and how much I enjoyed it, but yet, it has too many drawbacks. However, I did like it enough to add the next two books in the series to my "to read" list (I find it interesting that this "trilogy" seems to have at least FIVE books).
At first glance, it sounds like some crazy story my 5 year old might make up (with adult details!): different jewels, different castes, different rules - it all seems rather goofy and juvenile. But the wr ...more

After all the raving reviews I'd read, I think my expectations were perhaps a tad too high, and I ended up disappointed. It's not a bad book by any stretch, but it came across to me as very obviously the first book in a series as great effort was spent on building the universe and the characters and very little plot actually happened. I 'read' it as an audiobook and very often found my attention drifting as I really wasn't all that interested in many of the characters and their sub-plots.

So silly! These are a fun read, and the world is an interesting one, but the gender situation is even more troubling than the author seems to realize. I admit to having a tiny crush on Daemon in this book.

Disturbing but good
Every time I read a YA about a child or young woman who comes into or has power going through intense trauma — I feel queasy. It’s a hard thing to do without bringing up many problematic assumptions about the nature of power and victimhood. I think that the upswings in books of that nature are all authors trying to do what Anne Bishop does so well. Her worldbuilding lets her push the limits of what is and is not ok, and the ages at which all those limits become hard rather tha ...more

The first time I picked up this book I put it right back down. The opening is intensely violent and disturbing. When I started it the second time, I was rivited.
Reading this type of fantasy literature takes committment. The author does not take a lot of time to explain "the rules" of this world. What do the jewels mean? How do they appear? What does it really mean to "open to the darkness" or "offer to the darkness" whatever it's called. All of this is left rather vague. I am hoping that some o ...more

I picked these up on a whim and, while I found the premise fairly cheesy early on, I quickly got caught up in the storyline and the characters. The characters all begin to tie into each other, their lives indirectly overlapping, while they all find themselves protecting an unusual child. In a world of Rings of Obedience, uncles, and evil witches, one strange little girl must survive --- at all costs --- to free them all.
