The Confederation is made up of a number of wise, peaceful races. But when they encountered an implacable foe that would not be reasoned with, they decided maybe it was time to let some of the younger, more martial races into the Confederation in hopes they could fight back. Thus the space Army, space Navy, and space Airforce were born, initially populated by humans and then by various other, similarly uncivilized races that signed on as well.

Unexpected story
I’m used to military sci fi, but this one had actual aliens who didn’t just have small whimsies that made them different from humans, but actually different species with different needs and the complications that arise from a mixed platoon. Excellent read.
