All right, I am confused.

When this book came out last year, I kept hearing about it. It's been optioned for a movie. It was the summer book pick of many a magazine, there was tons of buzz and man starred reviews . . . Yet I cannot think of one person I actually know who has read it. AND WHY THE HELL NOT? This was FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. Do you like George Orwell? The Hunger Games? Fantasy? Sci Fi? Good books? THEN WHY YOU NO READ THIS?

Shelves: alternate-planes-and-histories, fantasy-and-sci-fi, young-adult, dystopian-and-post-apocalyptic, paranormal, aliens, cotton-candy, genre-blender
Cotton candy, with a generous side of info dump. The basic story was predictable, but fun. However, that's overshadowed by the amount of exposition that the reader must slog through early on. Additionally, many things don't make sense, the passage of time is completely confused, there are too many extraneous characters that I couldn't keep track of, and the real meat of the plot - the actual planning of the rebellion - takes place off stage. On the whole, this book feels really sloppy.

First, a question. YA or not? I didn't think that it was, but, while reading kept thinking it read like a less-good Twilight. I also didn't realize until after I finished that the author is in her early twenties, but that's no excuse - look at what Zadie Smith was doing at that age.

So, I didn't like it - I get that these types of paranormal books are incredibly popular, and I don't normally read them, but this sounded like a decent, light read. It wasn't. It was melodramatic and silly, filled w ...more
