Far future, mind fuck (thats a good things) gives way to a plodding story.
I didn't like it as much as the others in my book group. It did have a whole bunch of neat future ideas, with AIs and nanotech and biowarfare and corporatewarfare. But half the POV characters were annoying. I'm tempted to track down some of his short stories, that seems a better fit for the author's voice.

Once, I read a novella which was expanded into this novel. I happened to catch sight of this in a bookstore, and figured, why not give it a shot. (Via the library, of course.)
In the novella, the balance between character and technology is good. In the novel ... less so. And the new characters seem ... uninteresting. I stopped reading well before the end of the book.
