This reminded me of Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and the Dark is Rising books... but with something peculiarly Garth Nix, of course. Not sure whether it's the Australian part or something else.
I do like the sort of transcendent world, but have to say I am disappointed at the lack of a Christian worldview: after death, there is Nothing. The fantastical aspects are so rich, that lack seems highlighted somehow.

i usually love garth nix books, but this one just didn't do it for me. the story itself was interesting, but there was a little too much explanation and description rather than action so i felt like it just plowed along and never really drew me in. i'm continuing with the series and hope that the excessive description present in the first book in the series was just to set the reader up for the overall plot and that the following books won't be as ho-hum.

The story is okay but seems cobbled together from a few too many stock mythological bits and pieces. I hear the series gets better though, so I'll keep on.
