I should realize by now that if Jade C Jamison wrote it, I am going to love it. This one has been on my Kindle for much too long, and, honestly, I didn't even read the blurb when I settled in with it. Then I read the author's note about how this book came about. I would never intentionally include spoilers in a review, but this is the premise the book is built off of, not what the book is actually about, so I feel it is fair 5 Electrified and Philosophical Guitars for Be Careful What You Wish For

This one has been on my Kindle for much too long, and, honestly, I didn't even read the blurb when I settled in with it. Then I read the author's note about how this book came about. I would never intentionally include spoilers in a review, but this is the premise the book is built off of, not what the book is actually about, so I feel it is fair game to discuss- especially since it sets the tone for the review as well.

Ms. Jamison explains that the idea for the short story this book began life as came from a story on the radio one morning about a woman, convinced her husband is cheating one her, propositioning a waitress to seduce her husband. There is a big twist to the story though - the one that even I can imagine how it might trigger an author's imagination. The twist being that the husband and the waitress feel they are soulmates when they are forced into this compromising position by the conniving wife. The bigger question the book ponders is if your relationship starts with cheating, can you ever be sure that he won't cheat on you after he cheated with you. How true is the old adage "once a cheater, always a cheater"?

As a happily married woman, cheating is not a concept I am comfortable with. Honestly, the author writes this book, particularly the set up, to those who share my views. The waitress, as narrator, is a college student in desperate need of money for a car repair. She does start off scoffing a the offer, but as the price rises to exactly what she needs for the repair necessary for her to, not only fix her car, but, ultimately, to allow her to finish her degree, the idea of selling her integrity becomes harder to resist. The way things play out are never what you guess they would be - which is exactly what kept me reading and allowed me to invest in the somewhat dubious heroine.
As usual, Ms. Jamison writes the steamy scenes with a flair few other authors are able to pull off (the most obvious reason this book is for adult consumption only.) Also per the norm, the writing and editing are close enough to flawless to call perfection. The very human issues faced by the characters are the trademark drama this author flourishes under. The amount of philosophical pondering this one brought to my mind cemented the five guitars (the hero is the singer and bass player in a band that he wishes could be his full time career - enough for me to include this in my coveted rockstar romance category, though that definitely isn't key to the story.) Going into the specifics of those musings would definitely do more than dip into spoiler territory, not to mention personal depths that most certainly do not belong in book reviews.
Overall, nothing is what I expected in (and from) this book, which, alone, is enough reason for the high ratings. If you are not familiar with Ms. Jamison's style (which would be the first thing I suggest you remedy - this indie author is FANTASTIC), that could sound wrong; my expectations for anything in her catalog are very high. The conridictions in this review; heck, in the previous sentence, are a rather fitting reflection on the book itself. If you are looking for a lighthearted rom-com, this isn't it (though this author has penned a few of those that are amongst my favorites if that is what you are seeking.) If the summary raised your moral high horse hackles, this might be exactly the book for you. The fight to dislike the heroine on principle is one the author is well prepared to tackle.
I notice this is listed as book 1 in the series - I am beyond curious as to what other beliefs of mine she might challenge when she continues this series. I do hope the next title is in the works. ...more
