Mongrels feels like an author who just wants to world build. The writing is fine - I didn't really feel for the characters, and I think I was meant to. There was no plot, except in the last (major) chapter. And there was a lot of world-building. There were some cool ideas, but overall it was a bit lackluster. ...more

I really enjoyed Stephen Graham Jones' concept of what it is to be a werewolf. It's complicated, it's not pretty, there are so many logistics that I hadn't considered about shapeshifting. Most of the time, it's not a great way to be and I think that's what I loved about this.
Unfortunately, it was largely the only thing i loved about this.
