Close to five stars. A very cool concept, the characters are well-written and the POV characters (except William) are all very likeable. The 1930s colonial Malaya setting is a really interesting clash of worlds, in particular the mix of Chinese and Malaysian mythology and then how it affects everyone in the book (Malay, Chinese and Brits). The author clearly has a love of food as well, with the foods constantly referenced throughout the book. I love when authors do this.
