It's ok, but it reads like a twisted J. K. Rowling book. I have a trio of first year mages, one of which has the soul of a Voldemort like character. The nasty lizard midway through the book has the same yucky personality of the Black family house elf.

For the most part this book read like a Harry Potter/Lightning Thief and was enjoyable but didn't feel super creative. The reveal at the end was pretty interesting but I'm not sure if it's enough to compel me to read the next one.

I can certainly see how some reviewers have liked this to a popular series featuring a teen trio (two guys, one girl) who attend a specialized school and have an ultimate villain.
That being said, it is its own book with its own world that is built creatively and okay character development. The story is complex and intriguing.
Not just for kids.
