This was definitely written with the adolescent boy in mind. There's a little more gross-out descriptions than I like, and a truly terrible SCHHHLLUUUUURRPPPPing noise that made my skin crawl a little every time the narrator had to make the sound.
My actual biggest complaint, though, is that it takes nearly half the book for Jim to discover that he's a Trollhunter & has to help rid San Bernardino of the people-eating trolls. That makes the beginning drag on a little, but the pace really picks up ...more

This might become a 2 star... I don't know. Maybe it was just the audiobook, but I thought the pacing of the story was a little odd. The prose describing the trolls and the locations was beautiful, but I needed more detail about plot stuff and for plot detail to be delivered more artfully. The stuff with his dad was also unbearably sad at parts. Kirby Heyborne was a fantastic narrator, as always.

This book was a bit disappointing for me. I was so excited to be reading something by Guillermo del Toro that I was just hoping for more. It definitely read as a middle grade book, even though the main characters were freshmen in high school - the drama of having a crush, the bullying, the battling of monsters felt reminiscent of a weaker Percy Jackson. Overall, this was underwhelming.

2.5 - This started out fine, but it got a little too much towards the last 2 discs. Were a few surprises at the end, and Jim, Tubby, AARGH and the gang got a bit gory on the last disc. I listen to these in my car when driving grandsons here & there. The 11 yr old recognized the voice of the narrator as that of the guy who narrated Library of Souls. Some of the names of the different varities of trolls seemed like they came from a Dr. Seuss book.

Weirdly both slow and gross. Somehow I don't think of those two things going together but Kraus managed it.

I liked it. It was a bit too gruesome and gross for my tastes, in some parts, but I think a lot of middle grade boys would love this one. Lots of fighting, killing trolls in descriptively nasty ways, and overcoming bullies and becoming stronger, braver and more awesome than you were before :)

The adventure was great, the characters were wonderfully vivid, but it took so long to go anywhere.
If it had been edited to 1/2 it's length the story would have flowed more cohesively and not had so many long ebbs. ...more
