The Heir follows on from The Selection series, and I guess this could be considered a 'spin off' series to The Selection. This book takes place several years after the third book, and focuses on Eadlyn, the future Queen of Illea, and her own selection. Rather than holding the selection due to tradition, Eadlyn's parents decide that a selection would bring a sense of hope and happiness to Illea, with the intention of calming the unrest and protestation currently occurring against the monarchy.

Ok, so I have a huge love for these books. I am aware that there are many problems with this series (the poor and simplistic world building, the horde of cliches and overall ridiculousness of these books just to name a few). However, I can't help but find these books fun. There is something about them that reminds me of a Disney movie, how everything seems so magical and lovely, and you almost feel like a kid again. I am just taken to another place when I read these books, and it's just a cute, sweet and exciting experience.

In terms of The Heir itself, this is probably my favorite book in the series thus far. I found it honestly that little bit more exciting to have the story in the perspective of the person actually holding the selection. I have honest doubts about who is going to win (I am a loyal and hard core Kile supporter). The main reason for enjoying this book the most, is due to a huge unpopular opinion. I actually really like Eadlyn's character. Now don't get me wrong, she does some pretty selfish, bratty and mean things in this book. But I found she gave this fluffy, heavily romantic story some depth (and I found this book was a bit darker than the first three too). Her story is not only about finding love, but about learning that it is ok to open up to someone. That strength is not an absence of love, or vice versa. She is quite obviously struggling with the position enforced upon her, but she takes her duty so seriously to the extent that she struggles to acknowledge her own feelings. So yes, she is a brat and selfish beyond normal in this type of book, but I was rooting for her the whole time. What I loved most about her character though, is that her development was not primarily driven by the actual boys, but her love for her family. Her relationship with her family, particularly Ahren, was really lovely.

The only complaint I really have about this book was that it felt a little less structured, as the first two books in this series were heavily centered upon activities in The Selection. Due to Eadlyn having really no interest in finding a partner, as well as having the selection not being as controlled and enforced upon her as Maxon's had been, the book does not have as many formal activities. I was kind of disappointed with that, as I enjoyed the drama and tension that those brought with them. I guess there were still a lot of awkward and cringe worthy scenes that kept me entertained. I liked the book but I have very mixed feelings about Eadlyn.

I like that Eadlyn is headstrong and can take care of herself. But she's so self-centered! Her head is majorly inflated and she definitely needs to take it down several notches. I don't know how her maid puts up with her. And she constantly plays the I'm-the-most-powerful-person-in-the-world and I-do-what-I-want cards.

Excuse me, Miss Egocentric? Yes , you Eadlyn! Get over yourself!!

The Heir is good, but I have to say, the Selection is better. I liked America's voice more than I liked Eadlyn's. But I love them both! I like how Eadlyn has this powerful persona and how she strongly believes that she doesn't need a husband to be fit to rule. But sometimes, it comes out as arrogant and indifferent.

The Heir's plot is all about Eadlyn, America and Maxon's eldest child. It starts off with her parents' asking her to undergo the Selection. She refused at first, though she accepted as she realized that it would be a distraction from all the impending doom in Illeá. Thirty five men come to the palace and they are gradually decreasing in number, and as time passess by, Eadlyn is surprised to see that each of the remaining is starting to have a place in her heart.

Wow, this turned out to be a lot better than I expected, considering the mixed reviews I've read for it. I was afraid that I wouldn't like Eadlyn at all but then I suddenly found that she reminded me - a lot - of my best friend. Except for being a princess.
It all started off a bit slow and it was difficult to get to know Eadlyn, though. It didn't really happen until midway through the book. After that, however, I loved her to bits. And there were so many interesting guys as well - during America ...more

Now lets begin...The Heir is set 20 years after America Singer's story ended and now it's Eadlyn's time to have her own Selection and amazing she has no interest in it or ever having a love-interest her brothers already have suitors but she however does not.
