I’ve long been a big fan of Kingslolver and I think this may be her best yet. Demon (Damon) is a youngster in the Kentucky hills, living with his single, alcoholic mother in a trailer, where she makes one bad choice after another. It’s the 1980s and 90s and the opioid epidemic is just waiting to snatch a youngster like Demon. Kingsolver’s done her research (as always) and her disdain for Purdue Pharma is crystal clear; she paints an equally clear picture of the horrors of addiction, stark povert ...more

I had been avoiding this book because it is inspired by "David Copperfield", not my favorite Dickens work. Not reading this sooner was a big mistake; "Demon Copperhead" is the best thing I have read in years. I urge anyone currently committing my error of delay to pick it up immediately!

It is a compassionate, poetic, heartfelt depiction of people who with nothing more than their own dignity and humanity struggle in desperate circumstances. These rural Appalachians still lean on family first. The
