“The wonder is that you could start life with nothing, end with nothing, and lose so much in between.”― Barbara Kingsolver, Demon Copperhead

This was heavy. Demon is the Rocky Balboa of life. No matter how many times he got punched he kept getting up fighting. I think that is one of the great mysteries of life… how do some people survive the life burning down around them and some don’t? Is it chance? Is it some inborn trait? Or is it simply having at least one person in your life that cares enoug

I was lucky enough to have a wonderful professor who engaged us in a reading of David Copperfield that made me forever appreciate the writing of Dickens and his most autobiographical character. 'Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.'

That being said, Barbara Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead, a masterful updating and retelling of Copperfield, dares to make major female characters more nuanced and well-reali

From the first page, I was pulled into Demon Copperhead's world, a world painted in shades of hardship and resilience. Kingsolver's prose is both beautiful and unflinching, capturing the harsh realities of poverty and addiction in rural America with a raw honesty that left me breathless.

Too much heavy-handed, repetitive (word for word) messaging for me.

The best book I’ve read all year. Demon is a character that will stick with me for a long time. Every character in this book is memorable. This book drives home the tragedy of the opioid epidemic nation wide, but especially in rural Appalachia. Read. This. Book.

This book is important and true. Hard to read at times. I actually had to skim/skip some parts that hurt too much until I knew things went better, then go back and re-read them. LOVED Demon and his growth.
