Great book about the Americans who went to France during the nineteenth century and what they brought back to the states upon their return. It is interesting to find out about the educators, artists, doctors, and writers that studied and rested in Paris. This book was different from other McCullough books that I’ve read. It was not about a specific individual, like John Adams or Teddy Roosevelt. And it wasn’t about a specific event as in The Johnstown Flood. It was a name dropping, who’s who of influential Americans who traveled to Paris between 1830 and 1900. I began with the audio book, but as much as I enjoy both McCullough and Edward Herman as readers, I found the anecdotal nature of the text dif ...more
