I read the novel because I had seen the film twice and wanted to understand the philosophical aspects that the film, necessarily, leaves out. I found it thought-provoking and particularly enjoyed the highly original existentialist perspective - which presumably are the reasons it shot quickly to 'classic' status when it first cam out in the eighties. Just occasionally I found it hard-going and vapid in its messaging (and I have a degree in philosophy and am familiar with existentialist thinking) ...more
