It was great fun to revisit d'Artagnan and his companions over the last few weeks. The novel is a delightful adventure through early 17th century France. It is not exactly a deep novel in terms of characterizations and psychology, but the blend of fiction and history created by Dumas certainly pulled me into the story. Long rides along dusty roads, red wine, companionship, loyalty, love, intrigues, storms and duels. Apart from such adventures it also triggered further interest in the history of ...more

About 3.5 stars, rounded to 4.
Despite many violent deaths which occur, the style of this novel is lighter than Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo and Queen Margot. A couple of scenes are pretty comedic in fact. There is a good bit of really good writing interspersed with the frequent action. It's a little long, but a rewarding read.

A fun adventure story, but I found The Count of Monte Cristo much more dramatic.
