This is a re-read. I always have the intention to read this every year, but I often don't get the opportunity to read more than a couple of pages.

Charles Dickens had a brilliant facility with language. He spins lovely, funny, engaging sentences that make me wish for an ease with words like his. I love the way he tells the story. Close to the beginning of this book there was a paragraph describing Scrooge that was so vivid and clever, I laughed out loud causing my husband to question what I had heard.

A Christmas Carol is the classic Christmas story of the redemption of Ebeneezer Scrooge. Scrooge is a stingy man with no family or friends. The ghost of his deceased partner appears to him and warns him that he must change his ways or suffer for eternity. To assist the change, Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who show him images from Christmas past, present, and future. I have seen so many movie adapations of the novel that the story felt like a reread. It is a heartwarming story and a bit ide

A Christmas Carol, a well known classic by Charles Dickens. I don't know if I ever really read it or just knew it from the many TV and radio shows that I have seen, many of which are quite true to the book. This story read as if the narrator was talking directly to me. It was a bit sarcastic and a bit dry humor and it was a fun read. I am not going to worry about spoilers here as who wouldn't know this story? The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future come to Scrooge and teach him to be a

A Christmas Carol is just delightful - - as good as all the television movies and plays based on it. Dickens can really create the most wonderful visuals as you are reading, and he certainly develops his characters. Scrooge typifies the type of character that you just love to hate, and then end up loving. The descriptions in the story are totally evocative, and as you all know already, the ending is completely heart-warming.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Charles Dickens and how witty his prose was. I chose this book because it is on the MLA Must-Read List. It was the shortest Dickens' work on the list, so I figured it was the place to start. I hadn't read Dickens since high school (Hard Times) and his writing style was now unfamiliar to me.
I can't say I loved this book, but I did enjoy it. The story is well-known to most of us, so it was interesting to read the original version. Next Dickens books on the list a ...more

Short and sweet, a Dickens favorite. My family watches the Albert Finney musical "Scrooge" every Christmas!
